Heather Nelson Profile Image

Heather Nelson

I am a passionate painter, mother, art educator, singer and general maker of things. I believe that art can be a catalyst for discovery, healing, and joy.

About the Artist

Heather Nelson was born in Edmonton in 1976. She is a passionate painter and art educator who currently lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Having grown up in between the Rocky Mountains and the vast prairies and in her mother’s beautiful garden, she felt at home outdoors. Throughout her life, Heather became particularly intrigued with the images and symbolism of trees which continues to be a common theme in her paintings.

Heather first became interested in art when her teacher, Mrs. Smith nurtured her creativity in Junior High Art class. She went on to study Fine Arts and Education at University of Calgary. After graduation, Heather pursued her education career while always keeping her art practice alive. She has shown her work in shows at Art Central and Ambrose University as well as creating commissioned pieces for private collectors.

Her paintings are expressive, colourful and often embody movement. Heather’s artistic influences include Marc Chagall, Georgia O’Keefe, and contemporary artist Makoto Fujimura.

She is currently the Junior High Art Teacher at Glenmore Christian Academy where she fosters a creativity and a joy of art in her students. She is married with 3 fantastic children. Heather enjoys hiking and nature walks, as well as reading and singing.

Heather's devotion to art education was featured in the Inspired Albertan series on CTV hosted by Darrel Janz in 2020.
